History
Atlético Madrid was founded in 1903 by a group of Basque students. The club played its first official match on February 8, 1903, against Athletic Bilbao, which they lost 3-2. Throughout the years, Atlético Madrid has had several highs and lows. In the 1950s and 1960s, they won several domestic titles and reached the European Cup final twice, but were beaten on both occasions. In the 1970s, they won the Intercontinental Cup and three Copa del Rey titles.
Recent Success
In the last decade, Atlético Madrid has enjoyed a period of sustained success, particularly under the management of Diego Simeone. In the 2013-14 season, Atlético Madrid won the La Liga title, breaking the dominance of Barcelona and Real Madrid, and reached the UEFA Champions League final, where they were beaten by their city rivals Real Madrid.
